Mink are known to take chicks and they are a fearsome predator to any small water birds. Don't feed the chick a diet of human baby foods, hamburger meat, tuna, bird seed, milk, hard boiled eggs, bread or water as this will kill them. Here we have a juvenile feeding the next generation. On the basis of that it would seem unlikely that they would take something as big as a Moorhen chick. Moorhen abundance. The Chicks just know to refuse … Maybe the male abandoned the young and chased the female away, who knows. They require care that can only be provided by a wildlife rehabilitator with the experience and tools (including sophisticated temperature-controlled brooders) needed to care for hatchlings. So what an odd situation, in the little canal is a parentless young Coot with a female who apparently abandoned her own young, and around the bend in the long part of the canal about 500 metres away is a Moorhen family which adopted this abandoned a young Coot. They are not as good at it as their parents, and offer things like corn grains by mistake. !
