The western tragopan is a scarce, shy, and elusive bird. It was accorded the status of state bird of Himachal Pradesh in 2007. Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) State Bird Himachal Pradesh The diversity in the State’s geography, from the plains to the mountains, helps Himachal to be home to many plant, tree, bird and animal species; many of them being endemic to the state. Western Tragopan The Western Tragopan or the Western Horned Tragopan is a bird from a Pheasant family known as the Tragopans or the Horny Pheasants. It’s endemic to the western Himalayas from northern Pakistan in the west to Uttarakhand within India to the east. In Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, this bird is locally called jujurana. The purpose of this study is to assess population status, spatial distribution and threats faced by the species in Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary (DWS), HP; a potential western tragopan hotspot. Its range is very restricted. But monal (lophophorus impygenus), another beautiful bird, remains the State Bird of Uttarakhand and the national bird of Nepal.
Locals call the species jujurana, king of birds. The third State Wildlife Board meeting in 2007 decided to crown western tragopan (tragopan melanocephalus), locally known as jujurana, as the state bird of Himachal Pradesh dethroning monal from its exalted position. Western tragopan is considered the rarest of all living pheasants. Males are as beautiful to behold as they are rare to spot. Western tragopan is one of the flagship species of the Himalaya and is the state-bird of Himachal Pradesh (HP), India, which is a stronghold for its population. The Western Tragopan is the rarest of all pheasants, and was also recorded as the state bird of Himachal Pradesh in India in 2007. Structure of Western Horned Tragopan
