On Clay-colored there are pale feathers all the way around the eye, and these blend into just slightly darker feathers, not contrasting at all above the eye (just a broad pale eyebrow stripe). All of a sudden, it really felt like autumn had arrived.

#4 is clearly a Clay-colored Sparrow, but #2-3 has dark lores and crisp streaking making it a Lincoln's Sparrow. If late September had been more subdued than average in northern Franklin County, October had gotten off to a cracking start! There is a gray band across the nape of the neck splitting the streaked head and neck. And while nobody has a 'ruler' in his or her head, I think you can see - if you're at all familiar with Chippers - that the subject sparrow is a more robust, deep-chested bird, with a heavier bill.

The streaked underparts indicate this is a juvenile Golden-crowned Sparrow. But there is another difficulty many birders have with this sparrow: they fail to appreciate its most distinctive field mark.
