New York Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association. It is a fun challenge following them because they have an erratic flight pattern. The Edwards’ Hairstreak always has this row of separated spots, and each spot is surrounded by a white ring. Banded Hairstreak (Satyrium calanus) Banded is the most common and widespread of our Satyrium hairstreaks, occuring throughout North Carolina, though most common in the Mountains and Piedmont, from late spring through mid-summer. This blue spot rarely has an orange cap on the inner edge, but it is possible to see one there. The Red-banded Hairstreak is dark gray-black brown scattered with patches of iridescent blue, with a large band of red or red-orange near the tails. The red-banded hairstreak, Calycopis cecrops (Fabricius), is a very attractive butterfly and is one of our most common hairstreaks throughout the southeastern United States in dry open woods and wooded neighborhoods. Primarily a southern species that has recently appeared annually in northern counties.
Friday was a scorcher, but today was a little better temperature for being out in the field. There is a blue spot and at least one black eyespot near the double tails.
Above and below this blue spot are bands of red-orange bordered in black with a thin line of white.

The Banded Hairstreak is chestnut brown with a beautiful blue patch on the hindwing surrounded by a black and red pattern. 20 Banded Hairstreak Satyrium calanus (Hübner, 1809) “The hairstreaks are among the most exquisite and delicate of all our butterflies” wrote Clarence M. Weed of the Lowell State Normal School, a century ago in his popular book Butterflies Worth Knowing (1919: 242). Thus, as with White M Hairstreak, we would expect to see more of this alluring southern butterfly. Both species are found throughout the state and where you find one species, you are likely to see the other. This species and the Edwards’ Hairstreak share many of the same habitats and behaviors. Upperside brown, hindwing blue. (Had to think of some sort of title!) They have become very common in oak savanna and oak woodlands but do not congregate in large numbers. Red-banded Hairstreak has been extending its range northward for the last century, probably in response to climate warming.
