Once youve had your fill of the woodland, follow the paved part of Perrywood Lane in the opposite direction as it winds its way downhill and then back uphill over the railway line towards Watton at Stone. It then heads west through more nice open countryside until you reach a fantastic county pub for some well-earned refreshments about two thirds of the way around the route. From there, a towpath follows the river through Kings Meads nature reserve, runs beneath the A10 flyover and on to Ware Lock next to the GSK offices. The local nature reserve has an easy access circular walk of one km, whichstarts and ends at the car park. If you choose to cycle this route with children, Id recommend doing it from Welwyn to Hertford as its slightly downhill and you can really whizz along it the journey in reverse might be more of a struggle for little cyclists. Grand Union Canal stretches from London to Birmingham and passes through Hertfordshire. You can expect some nice open countryside with nice views on this route, and a great choice of two lovely pubs in the village to enjoy after your exercise. Parking is free, and unless you're going at peak times on a sunny day you'll get parked easily. If you wanted to extend this walk, you can combine the two walks to make a longer 6km walk. It also then visits the All Saints church before descending back to Dane End. Expect lovely views, peace & fresh air, lots of horses roaming around and a little detour to a truly wonderful country pub towards the start of the route. However, the main reason to choose this route is it visits the Tewin Bury Farm where you'll find a nice farm shop and various restaurants and cafes. There are not a lot of surprises on this one as you will be mainly strolling around open arable farmland footpaths, but you will enjoy a dose of fresh air, peace, quiet and a lovely village pub towards the end of the route. On the edge of the reserve is a brilliant sculpture trail with carved wood art works depicting elements from local history - a Roman . Wittenham Clumps - FREE. This route heads in the opposite direction to the first and takes you into the countryside to the south of the town towards Aspenden. From there the path follows the Beane before passing through a field and onto Barleycroft, a small residential road. After a short stroll through the High Street with it's lovely church and wonderful pub with great beer garden and play area, you'll then embark on a short circular and relatively flat walk around the Standon lordship countryside and River Rib. Walk Length: 5.6km. If you fancy a weekend away, Id recommend Hill Farm Campsite which is within walking distance of Wendover Woods. The track is usually quite muddy at its lowest point but I have managed to push a buggy across it on numerous occasions (it might be impassable with a buggy after particularly heavy rain). For families with older children, the reserve has a range of habitats woodland, heath and meadow to explore. The woodland area is well managed by the Countryside Management Service and walking routes are all clearly signposted. This is Hertfordshires only national nature reserve and its a good one for families. The walk also calls in on the village of Rushden about a third of the way around the route and we've marked a short detour at that point to a lovely country pub for a refreshment pitstop if you need.
