Haystack Rock has the largest population of nesting Tufted Puffins on the Oregon Coast. That something was the breeding population of Tufted Puffins that nest at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. Once that’s done they head back out to sea. That’s good enough for the birds who come in to build their nest, lay their eggs and hatch their young. Throughout the puffins' stay, interpreters from Cannon Beach's Haystack Rock Awareness Program will be on the beach with spotting scopes focused on the nesting birds offering visitors an opportunity to see the colorful characters. Recently, their numbers have decreased dramatically at Haystack Rock and they are in significant decline or have disappeared entirely from colonies in California, Oregon, Washington, Japan, and the Gulf of Alaska.
