I felt like I needed to make a post educating more people about this because not many people are aware of how big of a problem puppy mills are with the Amish. But since puppy mill = filth and abuse, when they walk into a clean commercial facility or the offices of a broker or buncher (more below on those two jobs), they do not identify that as a puppy mill. If a breeder you are looking at insists that they can only meet you someplace other than their breeding facility, you are likely dealing with a puppy mill.

They make some great furniture and quilts and Amish donuts are CRAZY good- like crack but food. People are now educated enough to realize that they should not buy from a puppy mill. Growing up they really weren't too much of a bother. A puppy mill by definition is a business that sells dogs to pet stores. Puppy mills will generally either sell dogs in bulk to re-sellers/pet stores or go to places like flea markets or sell dogs on craigslist and meet you at Walmart to make the exchange. Horrific puppy mills do exist, but they are VERY RARE.
I am from Pennsylvania, where we have a large population of Amish people and also a large number of puppy mills. These farms can have anywhere from 10 to 1,000 + breeding dogs stuffed in barns, stacked in cages living in livestock like conditions.

They kept to themselves and we kept away from them. How can I help fight this?
